Abstract


A study of 44 patients with paralyzing sciatica, examined and treated at the Department of Physical Medicine of İstanbul Medical Faculty, reveals some of the characteristic features of this disease.
1 Fifty nine percent of the patients with paralyzing sciatica are males.
2 The disease is more common between the ages 31 and 60.
3 In halt of the patients, the paralyzed muscie is Tibialis Anticus.
4 The excruciating pain, which is present at the beginning of the disease, usualiy disappears following the appearence of paralysis.
5 Only twenty five percent of the patients with paralyzing sciatica could have a complete cure following medical and physical treatments.
6 Electrical stimulation of paralyzed muscles, infrared radiations and sinusoidal currents are the most commonly used physical modalities for the treatment of paralyzing sciatica.
